Scam Alert
On September 10, 2012 a Ledyard resident reported to Police that she had received a correspondence in the U.S. mail which she believed was fraudulent. She reported that this was the second such letter she had received in less than 1 year. The letter indicates that the resident had won $150,000 from USA Mega Draw. The letter included a check, made out to the resident in the amount of $4,200. It states that the check is to help pay the "processing fee" of $3,200, which they are to send back to get the $150,000.
Scams such as this are frequent and widespread. Residents should never participate in any scenario in which funds are requested from you in exchange for larger winnings. This includes situations, such as this, where a check is enclosed to cash. Ultimately the check, which is written fraudulently from a legitimate company, bounces with the victim being held responsible for the amount paid to them. Should you have any questions please contact the Ledyard Police Department.
