Vehicle Fire
On Sunday August 3, 2008, at approximately 0050 hours, the Ledyard Emergency Communications Center received the report of a vehicle fire in a driveway on Gallup Hill Road in the Town of Ledyard. The Ledyard Center Fire Company Number 1 responded and quickly extinguished the fire. The Ledyard Police Department and Office of the Ledyard Fire Marshal responded to the scene. Based upon their investigation, the fire was deemed to be of a suspicious nature and a criminal investigation was launched. This case remains under investigation. Burglary
On Monday August 4, 2008, the Ledyard Police Department responded to a residence located on Drawbridge Road in the Gales Ferry section of town for the report of a burglary. On arrival, the patrol division discovered that during the evening hours unknown person(s) forcibly entered the home and stole several items of value. Officers from the patrol and detective divisions processed the scene for evidence and the criminal investigation continues. Burglary
On Tuesday August 5, 2008 at approximately 8 p.m., the Ledyard Police Department received the report of a burglary having been discovered at a residence on Colonel Ledyard Highway. On the arrival of the patrol division it was determined that entry was forced into the home and several electronic items of value were taken. Burglary
On Thursday August 7, 2008, at approximately 8:30 p.m. the Ledyard Police Department received the report of a burglary having occurred into a residence on Lambtown Road. Patrol officers responded and quickly secured the scene, discovering that the crime could have possibly been interrupted by homeowners. An investigation commenced by officer from the patrol and detective divisions. During this investigation it was discovered that an individual involved in this incident may have received a laceration type injury to some portion of their body, possibly a hand or arm. Bus Accident
On August 13, 2008, at approximately 0920 hours, a motor vehicle accident occurred on Route 12 in the Gales Ferry section of Ledyard. This accident involved an unoccupied SEAT bus and a handicap van with clients on board. The accident was heard by a Ledyard police officer on another assignment at an adjacent location who reported the accident and immediately provided care at the scene. Firefighters from the Gales Ferry and Ledyard Fire Companies, along with ambulances from the Ledyard Volunteer Ambulance Squad, United States Submarine Base Ambulance, Groton Ambulance, and Poquetonuck Ambulance, along with Lawrence and Memorial Hospital paramedics responded. Three individuals were transported to the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital and 2 were transported to the WW. Backus Hospital for their injuries. As a result of this accident Route 12 remained closed for approximately 1 hour. Both vehicles were being operated northbound on Route 12, just north of the Long Cove Road intersection, when the SEAT bus struck the van from the rear. This accident remains under investigation. Dirt Bike Accident
On August 16, 2008, at 1637 hours the Ledyard Police Department, along with the Ledyard Fire Department, L and M paramedic, and the United States Submarine Base Fire Department Ambulance responded to the report of a motorcycle versus tree accident. On their arrival emergency units found a female operator had struck a tree in a yard on Colonel Ledyard Highway while riding on the property. She was treated for minor injuries and transported by Sub Base ambulance to the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital.
Attempted Burglary
On August 25, 2008, at approximately 0130 hours, the Ledyard Police Department was contacted by a concerned citizen about suspicious activity near the Ocean State Job Lot plaza in Gales Ferry. On arrival of patrol officers, contact was made with a juvenile subject. The subsequent investigation concluded that 4 juvenile subjects had conspired to commit a burglary to an area Package Store and were in the process of initiating this crime when confronted by Police. All 4 juvenile subjects were taken into custody and charged with Criminal Attempt to Commit Burglary. They were released to their parents and will be appearing in juvenile court.This incident shows the importance of citizens reporting suspicious activity to police. Tresspassing
On August 24, 2008, at approximately 0145 hours, the Ledyard Police Department responded to the area of Route 117 near Bolduc Drive for the report of a loud disturbance. Upon the arrival of police, vehicles were observed leaving the town property at that location. The vehicles were stopped and 4 individuals were issued infractions for simple trespass. This recently acquired town property has been the subject of numerous trespassing complaints and the Ledyard Police Department will be increasing efforts to enforce trespassing laws on this property.
